The University of Minho was founded in 1973 and is known as one of the then named New Universities that, at that time, deeply changed the landscape of higher education in Portugal. Located in the region of Minho, known for its significant economic activity and by the youth of its population, University of Minho has played the role of development agent in the region.

The level of the scientific, technological and cultural activity of the University has granted its international recognition. Its students finish their degrees and diplomas with a universal perspective, acquiring a rich knowledge and experience that qualifies them over a broad range of competences for their professional activity, and assimilate this reality.

International university events at UMinho

The University of Minho, besides its national activity, is very active on the international level. As relevant international university sporting events that have occurred at UMinho, we can name the World University Futsal Championship in 1998 (FISU), the European University Volleyball Championship in 2004 (EUSA), the European University Basketball Championship in 2006 (EUSA) and the World University Badminton Championship in 2008 (FISU) as well as regular editions of the Galaico-Duriense University Games between Galiza (Spain) and northern Portugal Universities.

In 2006, University of Minho hosted the EUSA European University Basketball Championship and in 2008 the FISU World University Badminton Championship.
